It's the first scale everyone learns and the one everyone abandons\, which is exactly why there's still so much left in it. \n \nI've written entire pieces with nothing but these five notes. One is a Hendrix-inspired ballad. Another is outside fusion with modern phrasing that sounds nothing like a pentatonic and it is one. Same scale\, opposite ends of the spectrum. I'll take both apart in front of you and show you the decisions behind them. \n \nThen the part nobody expects: stack these same 5 notes into voicings\, walk them diatonically\, add open strings plus the blue note\, and you get harmony off a Holdsworth record. \n \nFive notes.
